Presenting a decision-support tool that helps clients quantify the return on investment (ROI) of high-quality lighting design by linking lighting conditions to employee health, productivity, and operational costs. The tool uses building size, number of employees, and personnel costs to calculate the financial impact of poor lighting, including productivity loss and sick days caused by issues such as migraines and fatigue. It also estimates long-term utility savings by comparing energy performance against code using smart controls and efficient fixtures. Designed for offices, schools, long-term care, and acute care environments, the tool supports better decision-making by making the long-term financial benefits of human-centered lighting design clear and measurable.

Basic knowledge about how the brain processes light is recommended.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the relationship between lighting quality, employee health, productivity, and operational costs.
  • Describe how poor lighting conditions can contribute to productivity losses, absenteeism, and health-related impacts such as migraines and fatigue.
  • Explain how a decision-support tool can be used to quantify the financial impact and return on investment (ROI) of high-quality, human-centered lighting design.
  • Apply energy and cost considerations, including smart controls and efficient lighting fixtures, to support informed lighting-design decisions across workplace and healthcare environments.
