This panel will explore the value of distinguishing between lighting design and lighting consultation. While often used interchangeably, these services differ significantly in scope, process, and impact. Consultation typically involves basic layouts, code compliance, and performance-based specs—valuable but often generic. Lighting design, by contrast, integrates artistic vision, technical rigor, and detailed mockups to create distinctive, non-substitutable outcomes. A panel of leading designers will debate whether defining these roles more clearly could help protect design integrity, clarify contracts, and reflect real-world project scopes—from performance specs in back-of-house areas to design-intensive, no-substitution zones in key features.
Basic knowledge of lighting design and proposal process is helpful.
Learning Objectives
- What is the difference between lighting design and consultation?
- Discussion – is it time to draw a finer distinction in terms of contract responsibilities for lighting designers and consultants?
- Discussion – Does drawing a distinction like this ultimately help or hurt the profession of lighting design, or does it reflect the reality of the services provided?
- Discussion – Is it possible to create different scopes within a project? For instance, the facade scope will be a designed element, with no substitutions accepted, while the common areas are more of a performance spec with an open bid?

JP Bedell brings eleven years of experience at SDA, supported by a rich background in both architectural and theatrical lighting. Prior to joining SDA, he designed lighting for Abercrombie & Fitch and Tirschwell Architectural Lighting. Earlier in his career he worked as a theatrical lighting designer,

Scott draws upon an extensive background in lighting for dance and theatre to inform his work in architectural lighting design. His theatrical experience includes a Broadway national tour, various regional theatre productions, and a particular passion for found space theatre. Scott is passionate about the way lighting impacts lived moments and memories and how our architectural environment shapes human experiences. Scott exercises his knowledge in the business of design and his creative problem-solving skills to facilitate the successful execution of designs with a high value to the client. Scott holds an MFA in Lighting Design from Carnegie Mellon University.
