Introductory
A lighting designer might spend 90 hours working on a project, and then someone gets the ok to “redesign” the fixture schedule in 20 minutes. What are some of the ways to push back – and keep the preferred schedule intact? Both from a designer and a manufacturer’s rep perspective, this presentation will give you tips and tools to slow down the VE onrush.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify several mechanical and optical performance categories to compare lighting equipment.
- Participants will understand how insightful specification development during design will help safeguard lighting integrity during construction phase and VE efforts.
- Participants will learn how lighting specifiers can retain the ear of the owner or client during the VE phase so that decisions on lighting design quality for the project are clearly understood.
- Participants will learn several communication tips with lighting reps and factory sales managers to convey expectations and preserve the design integrity.

From his architectural engineering education to his professional experience as a lighting designer and electrical engineer for over 35 years, Andy has acquired a rare set of skills which serve him well in his capacity as Vice President and studio director at LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE. Thorough communication during all phases of design and construction is vitally important to the success of any project. In addition to careful collaboration with the owner and architect to enhance their vision, Andy’s unique background and experience allows him to communicate equally well with other technical consultants.
Since joining LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE in 1995, Andy’s domestic and international project experience has expanded to include single and multi-family residences, sports complexes, entertainment centers, convention centers, retail centers, restaurants, and theme parks. Most recently Andy has headed up a national campaign on behalf of JP Morgan Chase Banks to upgrade their branding image through architectural lighting and to update safety ATM lighting.
