Introductory

Lighting controls are required by the 2025 New York City Energy Conservation Code for many interior and exterior spaces in new construction and building additions and alterations in commercial settings. While the energy savings potential of lighting controls is well documented, system selection, installation and commissioning can be complicated and lead to unpredictable results. This seminar will cover the lighting controls requirements of the 2025 NYCECC and the variables for consideration in order to overcome common design, installation, facility management and occupant frustrations.

A general understanding of lighting control strategies (occupancy/vacancy sensing, daylight harvesting, scheduling, task tuning) is helpful but not required.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the lighting controls provisions of the New York City Energy Conservation Code (2025 NYCECC) and identify where and when the provisions must be applied.
  • Identify the characteristics of wired and wireless networked lighting controls systems and how system selection influences design, installation, commissioning and operation.
  • Appraise the methodologies used to integrate emergency lighting into a lighting control system to comply with UL924, the safety and performance standard for emergency lighting and power equipment.
  • Discuss common, real-life obstacles to integrating lighting controls systems into existing buildings.
