Driver, LED, and dimmer are specified separately and fail together. Pairwise compatibility does not guarantee three-way compatibility: a driver validated with a tape and validated with a dimmer can still flicker when all three are combined, and datasheets rarely publish the conditions needed to predict it. This session gives specifiers a repeatable method. Participants will identify the five operating conditions any dimming claim requires, calculate whether a load falls within a driver’s characterized range, evaluate flicker data against IEEE 1789-2015, and write specification language that captures them. Track: Design and specification topics.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the five operating conditions a dimming or flicker claim must state to be verifiable: dim level, control protocol, light source, load condition, and the standard and metric used.
- Calculate whether a proposed LED load falls inside a driver’s characterized operating band, using published minimum and maximum load values.
- Evaluate a manufacturer’s flicker data against the IEEE 1789-2015 risk boundaries and the Title 24 JA8 flicker provision, and state what each does and does not cover.
- Write specification language that requires those conditions as submittal items instead of naming a wattage.
