In recent years, the use of color-changing fixtures has been widespread in architectural lighting, yet no standardized evaluation method calculates the color-changing light attributes. The current photometric calculation tools fail to provide adequate information, and mockups are still the only way to compare RGB light fixtures accurately. In this presentation, we will share our conversation with various manufacturers, the concerns involved from the specifier’s point of view, and provide suggestions as to how the manufacturers can help specifiers to resolve these shortcomings. The unique, ultra-thin form factor combined with highly uniform illumination make OLEDs ideal for embedded applications where space is a premium and lighting is viewed directly by the user. When combined with the intrinsic high-contrast segmentation capability, OLEDs bring communication through lighting to the next level, allowing for branding and messaging on a more granular level. In this talk, we will explore the advantages OLEDs offer across current and emerging embedded product markets, including aerospace, rail, automotive, agriculture, furniture, and healthcare. In comparison to individual product efficiency (luminous efficacy), LAE can quantify the proportion of light that actually reach occupants’ eyes as a function of consumed power. Our proposed three-tier LAE framework accounts for luminaire efficiency, spatial efficiency, and visual sensitivity using ray-tracing software and data from visual studies. Our calculation tools and step-by-step guidelines will enable designers and manufacturers to assess lighting design solutions and characterize the energy performance of lighting systems, including smart lighting systems. This workshop will use mock-ups and measurement equipment with a group discussion, ultimately leading to the conclusion of how to reliably assess glare. This workshop will work through the metrics which predict glare, including beam and field angles, cut-off angles, then progressing to BUG ratings and UGR. We will demonstrate the use of luminance meters. We will also share the challenge of far-field photometry, which reduces the distribution to a point source, then scales it to a luminous box which assumes uniform lighting throughout. We will provide side by side demonstrations to explain concepts like BUG and UGR, then break the audience’s acceptance

Completed in 1881 by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler and Samuel Colman, the room was illuminated by decorative, hand-forged gas fixtures. Lighting designer Paul Marantz (Fisher Marantz Stone), and lighting restorer Dawn Ladd (Aurora Lampworks) will discuss how these fixtures were converted from gas to electric in the early 1900s and retrofitted to accept integrated LEDs during the room’s recent restoration.
